September 〰️ Rituals & Routines 〰️
Hey friend,
Happy September! Something about the fall season makes me crave consistency and stability. Maybe it’s the fact that for so much of my life, September has signified the start to a new school year. Maybe it’s the organized Virgo energy in the air. Whatever the reason, fall always feels like the perfect time to find balance again.
One of my personal favorite ways to re-build consistency is by creating a system of daily rituals. Check out the adorable video (on the left) of this young man’s daily, morning ritual and why it’s so important to him.
Pause for a moment and consider, what daily rituals already exist in your life?
Routine vs Ritual
They are not the same!
Positive Practice - Daily Rituals
-
What are you craving more of in your life right now?
Is it energy? Focus? Calm? Inspiration? Connection? Joy?
Before deciding what your ritual will be, decide why you need it.
What are you hoping this ritual will help you cultivate, create, or feel?
-
When and where can you realistically commit to this practice?
Maybe it's first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or before bed. Maybe it's on your yoga mat, at your desk, or sitting on the couch.
Keep it simple and work with the life you actually have.
The easier your ritual is to fit into your day, the easier it will be to stay consistent.
-
Now you know why, when, and where. So...what are you actually going to do?
What action will help you cultivate the feeling or quality you chose in Step 1?
If you're craving calm, maybe it's five minutes of breathing.
If you're craving energy, maybe it's a morning walk.
If you're craving inspiration, maybe it's journaling with your coffee.
Choose something simple, achievable, and enjoyable.
-
Put it on your calendar.
Go ahead. Right now. Take five minutes and schedule your ritual into your day.
Whether you create a calendar event or color-code it in your agenda book, physically making space for your ritual reinforces that this practice is important and worthy of your time.
Don't just hope you'll find the time. Make the time.
-
Now, practice your ritual and pay attention.
How does it make you feel?
Is it giving you what you hoped it would?
Does it fit naturally into your life?
What might need to change?
Rituals can create consistency, but they don't need to remain stagnant.
Let your rituals live, breathe, and evolve with you. Keep what serves you. Adjust what doesn't. Your ritual should continue to support the person you are becoming.
